Savon Sin Fuller : Conversations About Nothing
Born in Lower East Side Manhattan, Savon Sin Fuller is a familiar face to many. He also happens to be a good friend as he manages the venue we call home. Since he’s the homie (and it gave us an excuse to hang out behind his bar), we decided to go downtown and ask him a few questions about his life, as friends do.
Who is Savon?
Savon is someone who is passionate about his city, his neighborhood, his community, which is right here… in the Lower East Side/ Chinatown. I've been here for 28 years of my life and I'm still here.
That's one of the main reasons why I'm working in this establishment (Home Sweet Home). It’s one of the staples of LES/ Chinatown. I guess that's just who I am so far.
Born and raised, LES.
What's your life story in one sentence?
In one sentence? I can do it in one word: Hectic.
What inspires Savon?
I think importantly what inspires me is the people and the friends that I meet. Not only in nightlife but during everyday small interactions.
People inspire me in terms of clothing, how to carry myself in life and just, you know, I take a little bit out of everybody that I meet, which I think is a cool thing.
Beautiful answer. So we're here at the Alma Mater, Home Sweet Home…
How long have you been working here?
Honestly, not that long.
I've only been here almost five years now. I started as a bartender and I quickly helped managing here. It's been a blast so far.
Do you have any fun stories? Anything memorable, any good anecdotes?
I don't know if they're safe for work, but I'm just gonna I'm just gonna say it anyways. So you guys know the fog here gets pretty foggy, right? And it gets dark in that [corner] area.
I remember cleaning up one time and there was a used condom on the floor. I didn't go, you know, investigate, but I think it was used. That's one of the crazier things that's happened here. I'm pretty sure more things have happened, I just didn't catch it.
Do you have any favorite regulars you know that you can speak on?
I feel like this is a I'm gonna say you guys but you guys really aren't regulars… You guys really aren't regulars.
Damn, we're not regulars?!
They don't come by and see me at all ever. They only come by when they DJ.
No, I'm just kidding, but they do come by for drinks and stuff. But my favorite regular for real, I don't know.
Any least favorite regulars?
Oh, for sure.I don't know if I want to put them on blast.
So, thoughts on my father?
On your father??
Yea, Mike Spyros.
Honestly I love Mike Man, and I respect him so much. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be in the position that I am in now.
I hit him up randomly because I didn't want to work retail anymore.
Where were you retail?
At a million spots. My last spot was at Marc Jacobs and yeah, I didn't want to work retail anymore, so I randomly hit up Mike. I was like, “hey, listen, do you know anybody that's hiring?”
He was like, “actually, yeah, me, I'm looking for um, a bartender” and I was like, I have zero experience, no certifications. He was like, I don't care, fuck it, come in, I'll teach you.
And that was it. He didn't teach me shit, but you know.
How did you know Mike prior?
So I regular-ed so hard and I used to come here since before I was allowed and I don't even know if Mike realizes that, but I snuck my black ass in here since I was like 20. I'm 28 now, but yeah, I came here every single day and then eventually became cool with Mike, if you're here every day, you're gonna see Mike.
I used to come here on um on Femme Fatale nights, which we still do, so it's been years.
And yeah, I just became a regular. I regular-ed so hard now I'm helping run the shit.
What's your favorite drink to fucking make?
I'll tell you my least favorite: Any martini.
Any martini, especially when it's busy. People order like five martinis at a time.
Maybe I'm just lazy, I don't know… Like when you come down here don’t order a Martini, I just want you to tell me you want a beer shot combo.
What's your favorite place to dance?
If you guys know me and have met me [you know] I rarely dance, I rarely move.
Do you have a question for yourself or for us?
Yeah, wait, I want to know how you guys found this bar.
Frequencies.
Oh shit. That's crazy. Frequencies. Gotta get him back here. (3 days after this interview, The Dare threw an event at Home Sweet Home with IShowSpeed. Manifested.)
I came to one last summer and it was wild, dude. It was. It was so crowded.
Yeah, it always gets like that. and it gets too hot, too sweaty.
Okay, what's up with the AC? There were three AC’s out of the last party [Get a Room].
No, wait, we have five total. They all work now, at least they should. I don't know… Everybody got to stop producing so much heat.
We have five ACs, like four fans it never fucking helps. I mean, I guess since we're in a basement, it's just hotter. I don't know.
What was the last song you were listening to?
The last song I was listening to was I think let's see. Where's my phone at? Let's see.
Big 7 by Burna Boy.
I love Burna Burn
Anything you want to shout out?
Shout out to my boys Carter and Toma and Nothing Radio. You guys are amazing. Um what you guys are doing for, you know, for your friends and your community is also great.
And I told you guys earlier off camera. I recognized the hard work you guys put into this, everything, all the promotion, you know, the website, the camera work, everything is amazing.
I'm glad to be a part of it. So I appreciate that.
We appreciate what you guys do. I mean, there's no bar quite like this still in existence.
Literally home. We try to make it feel like a home for everyone.
