Lowertown

Getting off the Morgan stop, I’ve never seen Brooklyn so flat and barren. What feels like an industrial wasteland is only amplified by the sharp October air. The type of air that makes you feel more, and everything has a tinge of melancholy. The non-stop heat of summer dulls all your senses as you become accustomed to constant sweat, discomfort, and day drinking.

But when the seasons change on beat, October is that first month where you recognize the shift. While that has nothing to do with this, I’m just setting the vibe; Like a fireplace screensaver and a cheap bottle of wine.

It’s 7:45 pm, a tamer call time than the usual attached to club duty. Tonight, we’re at Our Wicked Lady to see Lowertown. I was introduced to Lowertown by the other man behind the blog, through a YouTube video of them performing Best Person You Know. I loved it off first rip.

The best way to describe this duo? Melancholic, as is the aforementioned October weather. Comprised of Olivia and Avsha, the Dirty Hit band performed exactly what I needed to hear on a fine fall evening.

A perfect blend of somber indie rock with gothic elements, both visually and sonically. Olivia dressed tastefully, layering neutral furs and knits, and Avsha in a checkered cardigan and baggy jeans. Indie is alive and well.

I was surprised by the lack of percussion, but it put more focus on the vocals and chords, which is what should be appreciated the most from these two. Did I dance? No, I was standing idle on the sidelines, mesmerized after finishing my K in the bathroom. While Lowertown were the openers, I didn’t stick around to see who played next, although I’m sure they were great.

Instead we got a chopped cheese and a beer at The Anchored Inn around the corner, and went to 3 deli’s looking for American spirits. We capped off the rest of the night in Manhattan at the latest venture from Standard Hotel.

Lowertown, we were there, keep it up, that was beautiful. Also can we please interview you please??
